Prepare Your Relationship for Lasting Commitment
If you and your partner both feel ready to take the next big step—get engaged or married, move in together, buy a house, or have a baby—congratulations! Before taking your big step, you want to ensure that your relationship is healthy and strong and learn the skills that will come in handy to continue to grow stronger together as a couple.
Your commitment to your relationship is an asset to your health as a couple. Premarital counseling can help you identify potential issues that could turn into bigger problems down the line and teach you skills to nip them in the bud.
The three most common reasons for conflict in relationships are Money, Sex & Parenting.
By choosing to participate in premarital counseling, you and your partner can smooth out any differences you both might have in these three areas, in addition to many others such as relationship with in-laws or parents, handling conflict better, etc. Premarital counseling can help you and your partner:
Understand the meaning of marriage or commitment
Create a relationship that is a true partnership where your partner is your top priority
Learn effective ways of communicating and expressing feelings
Learn how to handle conflict skillfully so that arguments don’t get out of hand
Make decisions about parenthood and parenting styles
Manage differences in how you and your partner spend and save money
Learn how to handle relationships with parents, in laws and families by setting healthy boundaries
Learn how to improve and spice up your sex life
Understand each other’s life goals and expectations from the relationship
Protect Your Relationship
The focus in premarital counseling is on preventing minor disagreements or issues from becoming worse, and setting a strong foundation for your future. Recent research shows that couples who participate in premarital counseling report feeling higher levels of satisfaction in their relationship, and decrease their risk for divorce or separation in the next 5 years by 30%.
How Premarital Counseling Works
The structure of the premarital counseling program at Tri-Valley Relationship Therapy, Inc. is flexible and is designed around the needs of each couple. The sessions can be done in person or via video conference. On average, sessions are done weekly or every other week and it usually takes 6-8 sessions to cover most of the premarital topics.
At times, a couple might need to focus on one particular topic more than others which could impact the number of sessions needed. What makes premarital counseling sessions at Tri-Valley Relationship Therapy, Inc. different from a premarital workshop or a course is that the sessions are private and your unique needs, goals, and aspirations are the focus… instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.
